$tock Tracker: Russell Rises On Buffett Bid, Vid Games Drop

THE DAILY’s $tock Tracker follows 50 stocks in areas that include sports activities, goods and services, publishing, media and entertainment. The following is a list of the ten best and worst performances of these stocks through the first half of ’06, with Russell Corp. leading the top performers largely due to a takeover offer from Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. Sporting goods, the best-performing sports sector in Q1, continued to do well overall through Q2, with Sportsmen’s Guide (+27.9%), Dick’s (+19.1%) and Cabela’s (+16%) all posting strong returns. Media and entertainment companies, which were not represented in the top-ten performers through Q1, have rebounded, with EchoStar (+35%), Comcast (+26.3%), Disney (+25.1%), News Corp. (+21.9%) and DirecTV (+16.9%) all outperforming year-to-date.

GOING DOWN: Meanwhile, Midway Games, which topped all $tock Tracker companies in ’05 with an 81% rise, has continued to give back those gains in ’06 (-57.3%). The ongoing struggles of the videogame industry are also reflected in the rest of the bottom ten performers year-to-date, where Take-Two (-38.9%), Electronic Arts (-17.7%) and Activision (-17.2%) all appear. THQ Inc. has also fallen 9% in ’06 (THE DAILY).
