“Bonds On Bonds” Discusses MLB’s Steroid Investigation

Former MLB Commissioner Fay Vincent, on last night’s episode of ESPN’s “Bonds On Bonds,” addressed MLB’s steroid investigation led by George Mitchell. Vincent: “My sense is that George Mitchell will call in (Giants LF Barry Bonds) and say, ‘I want to talk to you and I really hope you’re going to be helpful. We want to deal with steroids.’” Giants Managing General Partner Peter Magowan: “It’s an important investigation to have. We should try to get the bottom of what happened; we should get the facts out. It is important not to have steroids in baseball.” Bonds said, “I have broad shoulders and I’ll take it and I’ll take all the hits that everyone wants to throw at me and that’s it. I’ll forgive you and I’ll keep on trucking.”

WORTH THE EFFORT? Magowan said the team will celebrate Bonds passing Babe Ruth for second on the career home run list “because our fans want us to and because it’s a moment that deserves to be celebrated.” When asked about the controversy surrounding Bonds as he approaches the milestone, Magowan said, “It’s been worth it. We would build a statue for Barry Bonds no matter what happened to Barry Bonds because he deserves it.” Magowan, on the prospects or re-signing Bonds: “Do I have a personal responsibility to in the future keep Barry Bonds as Giant? I don’t think necessarily. ... I’d love to see him finish his career as a Giant but I can’t guarantee that’s going to be the case” (“Bonds On Bonds,” ESPN, 5/16).
