Judge Rules Angels Can Leave “Anaheim” Out Of Marketing

Judge Rules Angels Have Right To Exclude
“Anaheim” Name From Marketing

Orange County (CA) Superior Court Judge Peter Polos has ruled that the Angels can market themselves “as the Los Angeles Angels, with no mention of Anaheim,” according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. But Angels VP/PR Tim Mead said that the team “does not plan to do so and intends to continue to promote itself as the Angels, with no city attached.” Angels Owner Arte Moreno said in January that he “would not sell ‘Los Angeles’ merchandise at [Angel Stadium] and would not produce any such items but said goods produced by [MLB] could call the team by any name.” However, Anaheim co-counsel Mike Rubin believes the City Council is now “more likely to appeal the verdict, given what he called this ‘judicial sanction’ for the Angels to drop the Anaheim name everywhere but formal documents.” The deadline for the city to appeal has been delayed to June 11 (L.A. TIMES, 5/13).
