Grand Jury Subpoenas Anderson In Bonds Probe

Greg Anderson, the trainer of Giants LF Barry Bonds who last year pleaded guilty to BALCO-related charges, has been subpoenaed to testify before a grand jury in U.S. District Court in S.F. as part of a probe to determine if Bonds committed perjury in the ‘03 BALCO investigation, according to two sources cited by Williams & Fainaru-Wada of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Bonds told the BALCO grand jury that Anderson supplied him with flaxseed oil and arthritis balm — “substances that matched the description” of steroids called the clear and the cream. Williams & Fainaru-Wada add the grand jury also “will seek testimony” from BALCO VP James Valente, who was also sentenced in the BALCO case. The subpoenas of Valente and Anderson “suggest the grand jury is moving rapidly in an effort to evaluate evidence that could lead to an indictment of Bonds” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/26).

BONDS ON BONDS: Bonds addressed the upcoming grand jury testimony of Giants head athletic trainer Stan Conte during last night’s episode of ESPN’s “Bonds On Bonds.” Bonds: “I don’t know anything about it. I mean, I know that he has to go but I don’t talk to Stan about (it).” San Jose Mercury News’ Ann Killion said Conte being called to testify is a “very significant development because for the first time the story has gone beyond just a baseball player. It’s gone inside the Giants organization. That’s a serious, serious situation. ... Barry has always operated kind of as an independent contractor. He just operates in his own little satellite outside of the main team” (ESPN, 4/25).
