Colts Coach Tony Dungy's 18-Year-Old Son, James, Dies
Published December 23, 2005
JAMES DUNGY, the 18-year-old son of Colts coach TONY DUNGY, was
found dead in his apartment in a suburb of Tampa Thursday in what Hillsborough
County Medical Examiner’s Office spokesperson Dick Bailey called “apparently a
suicide,” according to Phil Richards of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. Dungy flew on Colts
Owner JIM IRSAY’s private jet to Tampa. Colts assistant head coach JIM
CALDWELL assumed control of the team, and Colts President BILL POLIAN
said that the timing of Dungy’s return “is unknown and entirely up to the coach.”
Irsay, who has a “strong relationship” with Dungy and spoke to him several times
Thursday, said Dungy is “a very spiritual man and grounded in great faith. Like
I told the team, darkness came to knock at this house, but this house is built
on faith and the faith that we have and the unity that we have only grows stronger.”
Buccaneers Owner MALCOLM GLAZER said that his team, for which Dungy previously
worked, would observe a moment of silence prior to Saturday’s Falcons-Bucs game
(INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 12/23). ESPN’s Steve Levy reported the Seahawks, who
host the Colts on Saturday, will also observe a moment of silence (“SportsCenter,”
ESPN, 12/22).
