GOLF: While the Barclays Classic near N.Y., the Deutsche Bank Championship near Boston and the Western Open near Chicago are reportedly likely to comprise a season-ending “Fall Chase” beginning in ’07, one tournament director said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem “is going to make sure they’re successful. It’s his legacy” (GOLFWEEK, 10/15 issue)....The Royal & Ancient Golf Club has “formally abandoned [its] ban on women competing in the Open Championship.” The decision comes on the same day Michelle Wie makes her pro debut (London TELEGRAPH, 10/13).

DRIVE BY: Sources said that San Antonio “has been bumped off” the ’05-06 A1 Grand Prix’ World Cup of Motorsports schedule and replaced by a Brazilian city. HollyHills Sports & Entertainment Group CEO Joe Heitzler said that San Antonio “could be part of the World Cup series” for ’06-07, but that HollyHills “is talking with [IRL] officials about possibly staging one of their grand prix events” (SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/10 issue).
