RACING FOR DOLLARS: Last night’s edition of CNN’s “Larry King Live” featured guest host Bob Costas with NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers JEFF GORDON, RUSTY WALLACE, KYLE PETTY and KASEY KAHNE. Petty, on 40% of NASCAR fans being female: “A lot of the sponsors are consumer products that are sold in grocery stores nationwide, and obviously women do the majority of shopping when you look at statistics on that. They’re really marketing to a lot more of the female audience now, but we’ve always had a pretty large contingent of female fans.” Gordon said “new racetracks in areas around the country” have helped grow the sport. Wallace: “This sport is spiraling upward ... and it hasn’t stopped yet. Almost every single sponsor that’s been involved in this sport has seen huge, huge rewards” (CNN, 8/15).

CALLING CARD: DOMINIC VALILA, a member of the Shea Stadium groundskeeping crew, admitted that he used a telephone inside Shea Stadium to take bets for two Mets employees. No players were implicated, but Mets clubhouse manager NICK PRIORE was named as a bettor. The team did not comment on Priore’s status, but Valila said that Priore “was let go immediately.” Valila was arrested May 18 as part of a $360M Mafia gambling ring and “expects to be fired later this month” (Scott Shifrel, N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/16).
