Kind Of Blue: Jays Eject Fan For Wearing “Offensive” Shirt

Fan James Stamos was ejected from Rogers Centre during Angels-Blue Jays Thursday night because an usher “complained his shirt was too offensive,” according to Isabel Teotonio of the TORONTO STAR. Stamos was wearing a T-shirt that read, “Ed the Sock is my Homeboy,” on the front and, “I’d rather be a smartass than a dumb-ass,” on the back. He was approached by security during the third inning and told “to either turn it inside out or leave.” Blue Jays President & CEO Paul Godfrey said that the “whole snafu was ‘ridiculous’ and apologized in person” to Stamos. Godfrey added that “because there is no official policy on what fans can wear, it’s up to staff to make judgment calls.” Godfrey: “It was a bit of an overreaction by our staff” (TORONTO STAR, 7/30). Ed the Sock is a puppet that hosts a controversial late-night talk show in Canada (THE DAILY).

CHANT RECANT: In San Diego, Jay Posner reports fan Jose Enriquez was ejected in the seventh inning of Reds-Padres on Sunday for “leading a derogatory chant against [Padres GM] Kevin Towers.” Enriquez said that security officials told him his “Towers Sucks” chant was “too loud.” Padres Dir of Security & Transportation Ken Kawachi said Enriquez “violated the team’s code of conduct” and that other fans had complained (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/1).
