Franchise Notes

In DC, Jason La Canfora cited two league sources as saying that attorney Steve Brown, who is representing Redskins LB LaVar Arrington in his financial grievance against the team, met last week at Redskins Park with NFLPA officials including Exec Dir Gene Upshaw, “at which time the matter was resolved.” One source said that all financial differences “were resolved” and there will be “no future arbitration hearings.” It was unknown if Arrington received any compensation in the settlement, but another source indicated that “part of the agreement had not yet been completed.” Arrington had claimed that the Redskins failed to include a $6.5M signing bonus in the eight-year, $68M contract he signed in ’03 (WASHINGTON POST, 7/30).

MOUNTAIN OF DISPLEASURE: Rockies Chair & CEO Charlie Monfort said that he will discuss the Red Sox’ conduct “over a fizzled weekend trade with [MLB Commissioner] Bud Selig, though he doesn’t plan to file a formal grievance.” Monfort: “I am very, very disappointed in how the Red Sox handled the situation. ... [Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino] said there were communication issues. For a guy who’s been in the business as long as he has to operate that way, it’s frustrating” (Troy Renck, DENVER POST, 7/31).

SINGLE LIFE: Baseball HOFer Wade Boggs in an interview with the BOSTON GLOBE’s Dan Shaughnessy said, “I invented ‘moneyball.’ Now they’re paying $16[M] to guys, but back when I played I was being chastised in arbitration for getting on base 300 times. They were saying I don’t help the ball club” (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/31).
