John Moores Sounds Off On Union Protecting Kenny Rogers

MLBPA To Blame For
Incidents Like Rogers?
Padres Owner John Moores contributes an Op/Ed in today’s WALL STREET JOURNAL concerning Rangers P Kenny Rogers participating in the All-Star Game despite being fined $50,000 and suspended for 20 games by MLB Commissioner Bud Selig for attacking two cameramen last week. Rogers is appealing the suspension. Moores writes, “Bad conduct is protected from appropriate [MLB] discipline by a bellicose baseball union, which remains on hair-trigger alert to safeguard its members from the imposition of any penalties, including those for assault or for the consumption of illegal drugs.” Moores adds, “The present dysfunctional system of rewarding thuggish behavior while punishing innocent parties should surprise no one who has been following baseball's struggles with this most militant of unions” (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 7/12).
