NFL Media Notes: NFL To Look Into Jags Training Camp Policy

The Jaguars’ “decision to close the third and final week of training camp to fans and the media has prompted the NFL to study whether it needs guidelines for media access to training camp practice sessions,” according to Vito Stellino of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. The Jaguars are the only team in the NFL to announce that policy, “although the Redskins want to limit media access to about five reporters after their first preseason game.” If the league issues “specific guidelines for training camp, they’ll only apply to the media. Teams will continue to have the right to close camp to fans at their discretion” (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 7/6). In Boston, Bill Griffith offers a three-part examination on access within sports media. NFL Manager of Corporate Communications Dan Masonson: “The network TV cooperation resolution approved by the clubs requires teams to allow network personnel reasonable access at practice one or two days before a game and to make players and coaches available for interviews or other pre-taping” (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/6). Browns Likely To Call Most Of The Plays On Team-Related Shows

WHO MAKES THE CALLS? In Cleveland, Roger Brown cited sources as saying that WOIO-CBS will have “very little power over what’s aired on” Browns-related shows, even though the station has a three-year deal with the team for local TV rights. The sources added that the Browns will “do most — if not all — of the production work on the team programs. And the team has largely completed work on its own broadcast studio in Browns Stadium, so they won’t even rely on [WOIO] for that service.” WOIO is paying the Browns $1M this season for the local TV rights, with 5% increases in both ’06 and ’07 (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 7/4).

IN THE BOOTH: In San Diego, Jay Posner cites a source as saying that MLB Rangers TV announcer Josh Lewin has “reached an agreement to be the new radio play-by-play voice of the Chargers” on Clear Channel’s KIOZ-FM. Lewin will continue working for the Rangers, “as well as Fox Sports, for whom he also announces baseball.” He will replace Dan Rowe, whose contract was not renewed when the Chargers “switched radio homes earlier this year” (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/6)....In Miami, Barry Jackson reported WPLG-ABC broadcaster Jimmy Cefalo and WTVJ-NBC’s Joe Rose “received permission from their television stations to become the radio announcers for the Dolphins” on the team’s new flagship, WAXY-AM (MIAMI HERALD, 7/3).
