In N.Y., Dareh Gregorian reported Dr. NEIL COPLAN was ordered to pay the family of DICK SCHAAP $1.95M after a jury determined that “shoddy medical care led to” Schaap’s death in December ’01. The jury found that the “carelessness” of Coplan was “a substantial factor” in Schaap’s death (N.Y. POST, 7/2).

SHINING BRIGHT: In Phoenix, Kathy Shayna Shocket reported Suns Owner ROBERT SARVER will donate $1M to the PHOENIX FAMILY MUSEUM in his “first major donation in the Valley” since buying the team. Suns Chair & CEO JERRY COLANGELO added $250,000 to Sarver’s pledge. The combined $1.25M is approximately 10% of the museum’s $12.3M capital fund-raising campaign. Sarver and Colangelo are co-Chairs of the campaign (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/5).

Howard Bryant’s “Juicing The Game”

JUICY REVIEW: In N.Y., Michiko Kakutani wrote Boston Herald sports columnist HOWARD BRYANT in his latest book, “JUICING THE GAME,” “provides a smart, savvy appraisal of the [MLB] steroid scandal, looking at its genesis and evolution and its implication for the game.” Bryant “asks why baseball leadership, from the commissioner’s office to the [MLBPA] did so little for so long,” as well as asking what role the huge profits generated during the steroid era played “in shaping the sport’s mindset of denial.” Bryant in the book writes MLB Commissioner BUD SELIG “was quick to blame the [MLBPA], yet no one in the game was in a public better position to take a stand. He had the moral authority and he did not use it” (N.Y. TIMES, 7/5).
