CENTERBANK OF JACKSONVILLE and the UNIV. OF NORTH FLORIDA in a survey of Jacksonville small businesses found that Jacksonville hosting Super Bowl XXXIX “had no impact on most of their bottom lines.” Seventy-seven percent of respondents said the Super Bowl had “no effect” on their business, and only 5% said that it had a “significant” effect, positively or negatively. Univ. of North Florida professor ANDRES GALLO: “Businesses who did positively overall were at 21.7[%], and businesses who did badly were only at 1.5[%]” (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 5/4).

Daly Expected To Soon Sign
On As Memphis Restaurant Co-Owner
REAL BEALE: Golfer JOHN DALY and Grizzlies G MIKE MILLER “are expected to sign the paperwork soon” to become partners in a Memphis restaurant with Univ. of Memphis basketball coach JOHN CALIPARI (COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 5/4).

KENTUCKY BURDEN: U.S. District Judge JOSEPH HOOD has dismissed portions of a lawsuit filed by former Univ. of Kentucky assistant football coach CLAUDE BASSETT against the NCAA, SEC and the school’s Athletic Association. Two parts of the suit will continue — an “interference claim against the NCAA and a fraud claim against the Athletic Association.” Bassett was the focus of an NCAA investigation that led to sanctions against the school in ’02. Bassett sued for $50M in damages, claiming that the defendants “conspired to keep him from another college job” (USA TODAY, 5/4).

AND THE WINNER IS: The PISTONS and OLSON + COMPANY, Minneapolis, won an EFFIE Award for advertising effectiveness for their “Crew Draft” campaign during the ’03-04 season (Palace Sports & Entertainment)....Sports Law attorney JAMES TANNER JR., partner at Williams & Connolly, has been named to the NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL’s “40 UNDER 40.” Tanner and his partner, LON BABBY, negotiated over $150M in NBA contracts in ’04 (Williams & Connolly)....The NLL awarded Toronto Sun beat writer MIKE KOREEN the TOM BORRELLI AWARD as writer of the year. The NLL also awarded the following execs of the year: JASON LINSCOTT of the Colorado Mammoth, ticket sales; JOHN MAHER of the Minnesota Swarm, marketing; YVONNE FOX of the Toronto Rock, team operations; JOHN ELLIS of the Colorado Mammoth, team sponsorships; and BOB POOLE of the Calgary Roughnecks, PR (NLL)....The UHL announced the following execs of the year: PAUL PICKARD of the Kalamazoo Wings, governor; RYAN WASHATKA of the Rockford IceHogs, GM; SCOTT SPROAT of the Ft. Wayne Komets, marketing; and MIKE MODUGNO of Kalamazoo Wings, PR (UHL).
