Newsmakers: Giants Lead The Way With Finalized Stadium Deal
Published April 15, 2005
WIN: NFL GIANTS – The on-again, off-again deal to build the team a new stadium at the Meadowlands appears to be back on, as the NJSEA’s GEORGE ZOFFINGER backs off his staunch opposition to public funding at the urging of acting Gov. RICHARD CODEY. While this week’s developments mark a victory for the Giants, there remains work to be done: resolution of an active lawsuit against Xanadu and coming to terms with the Jets should their West Side plan fail.
LOSE: VINCE NAIMOLI Sitting in last place in the AL East is certainly no surprise, but his reported tongue-lashing of a fan outside Tropicana Field and having a Mets scout removed from the ballpark after he used Naimoli’s private bathroom have prompted calls for his departure. One columnist wrote: “The only thing Vince manages worse than his ballclub is his anger.”
DRAW: NIKE Golf division gets mega exposure from TIGER WOODS’ miraculous chip-in on the 16th hole at Augusta National, but did company use questionable methods to ratchet up the count of players using its irons at The Masters? Rumors have Nike paying past champions $20,000 to play its clubs, but Nike says the deals were long in the works and are for at least one year. Hmmmmm.
