Pending approval from the City of Chicago and a final agreement, Jimmy Buffett will perform a pair of concerts at Wrigley Field over Labor Day weekend, according to Fran Spielman of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. The Cubs, who will be out of town that weekend, have agreed “to donate up to 3,000 tickets to neighbors and as much as $150,000 of the gate to neighborhood schools.” Chicago Alderman Tom Tunney, on the concerts: “This is a one-weekend deal right now. This is not something that’s going to be a regular, recurring event at Wrigley. The idea of opening it up on a regular basis is not something the community supports at this point.” But Cubs VP/Community Relations Mike Lufrano said team execs consider it “a one-time thing for now.” Spielman notes Cubs officials have agreed to cap attendance “at just over 39,000, no more than what it would be for a standing-room only” game. The motivation for the concerts “is money that would not fall under” MLB’s revenue-sharing umbrella. It is yet to be determined whether the 13 rooftop clubs “that agreed to share their profits” from baseball games with the team “would be allowed to sell tickets to” the concerts (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 1/19).
