Quote of the Day

“Brett Favre used to do the throat slash. I think that’s worse than just a fake moon. But, you know, Randy’s Randy and Brett’s Brett, so
Randy gets heat.”

— Vikings C Matt Birk, on reaction to Randy Moss’ “moon” touchdown celebration (AP, 1/11).

  • Fox, ESPN Drawing Criticism
    For Handling Of Moss Replays
It's been almost a year since Janet Jackson exposed herself to the world on a Houston stage, yet the reverberations are still being felt. Case in point: The uproar over whether to show Randy Moss' moon dance on TV. While Fox decided not to show a replay of the incident until its postgame show, and ESPN chose not to show it at all on Sunday, they opened themselves up to the Monday morning quarterbacks — some on their own networks. ESPN's Mark Shapiro was characteristically blunt in admitting the network made a mistake, telling the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, "We screwed up. There’s no question we should have showed it." He added the network was admittedly "caught up in the reaction to this post-Janet Jackson conservative decision-making era." The NFL again says it had no say, and that the decisions rested with the networks. The bottom line? It's clear L'Affaire Janet still has programmers and producers looking over their shoulders and uncertain over what is now acceptable to the American viewer.
