| Farrelly Brothers Finish Shooting During Red Sox’ On-Field Celebration |
The BOSTON GLOBE wonders what actors JIMMY FALLON and DREW BARRYMORE were doing on the field during the Red Sox’ celebration of their World Series victory Wednesday at Busch Stadium. A call to MLB for an explanation was not returned. The FARRELLY BROTHERS, directors of “FEVER PITCH,” asked for and received MLB’s permission to film the end of the movie on the field. The GLOBE notes the movie is being produced by Fox 2000, whose sister company broadcast the World Series, and writes, “Coincidence?” (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/29).
CRIME TIME: FRANK LINO, a member of the BONANNO CRIME FAMILY, told FBI investigators last year that Mets P JOHN FRANCO “gave free tickets to a Mets’ game in Montreal to him and other crime family members in the early 1990’s.” Lino told investigators that he and others “went out with players on the Mets after the game.” Nothing in the record “suggests that Franco is under investigation, but [MLB] has rules prohibiting players from associating with organized crime figures” (Jenkins & Rashbaum, N.Y. TIMES, 10/29)....In N.Y., Greene & Algar report former Islanders Senior Accountant HEATHER JABICK was arrested Thursday for “allegedly funneling nearly $174,000 in team money into her personal account.” Police said Jabick, who pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying of business records, made more than 55 unauthorized electronic transfers. Jabick faces up to 15 years in prison (N.Y. POST, 10/29).
A MAGNA-NIMOUS GESTURE: Magna Founder & Chair FRANK STRONACH has donated $6.5M to fund a regional cancer center in Newmarket, Ontario, so his employees and local residents “can have better treatment” (THOROUGHBRED TIMES, 10/26).
