Team Canada Dons Vintage Gold Uniforms In Victory Over U.S.

Canada Goes Old School
In 1920 Falcons Tribute

Team Canada last night wore a special Nike jersey in honor of the ’20 Winnipeg Falcons, the first Canadian Gold Medal-winning team in Olympic hockey history, during Canada’s 2-1 win over the U.S. in the World Cup of Hockey at Bell Centre, according to the CP. The “antique gold” replica vintage jerseys, worn only for last night’s game, continued Hockey Canada’s “effort to honour past Canadian teams.” The jerseys featured “Canada” on the back instead of each player’s name (CP, 9/1).

YELLOW FEVER: In Toronto, Mike Zeisberger writes of the jerseys, “Talk about winning ugly!” Flames C Jerome Iginla: “They’re nice sweaters to hang up in the wall in the basement.” Fans will be able to purchase replica jerseys soon, with proceeds going to a fund within the Canadian Hockey Foundation (TORONTO SUN, 9/1). In Toronto, Eric Duhatschek writes that the “eye-catching” sweaters “most closely resembled the mustard yellow of the Nashville Predators' third jersey” (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/1). In Ottawa, Chris Stevenson noted the color “appeared to be closer to ‘antique Grey Poupon’” (OTTAWA SUN, 9/1). In N.Y., Joe Lapointe called them “the color of mustard” (N.Y. TIMES, 9/1).
