Olympic Names & Faces: Medalists Continue The Media Rounds
Published September 1, 2004
The Silver Medal-winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night, where NBC’s Jay Leno showed the Wheaties box with all-around Gold Medalist Carly Patterson on the cover. Leno asked Patterson, “Do you know your Wheaties? How much riboflavin is in it?” Patterson: “I don’t know all the stuff that’s in it, but I know it’s good for you” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 8/31). ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser, on Patterson being on the Wheaties box: “If Carly Patterson walked in here right now in a leotard that said ‘I am Carly Patterson,’ I would not know her from Floyd Patterson. She should not be on a Wheaties box. ... (All-around Gold Medal-winning U.S. gymnast Paul) Hamm should be on a Wheaties box.” Miami Herald columnist Dan LeBatard, on Hamm not being on the box: “Wheaties does not want a controversy on its box. ... They don’t like controversy associated with their product” (“PTI,” ESPN, 8/31).

| Phelps Gearing Up For Disney’s Swim With The Stars |
MICHAEL & MICKEY: Gold Medal-winning U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps, Ian Crocker and Lenny Krayzelburg yesterday in Orlando began Octagon’s 12-city “Disney’s Swim with the Stars” tour. In Orlando, Tim Povtak notes the tour is Disney’s first involving Olympians, “believing the attraction and likeability of Phelps will keep swimming from fading in popularity as quickly as most Olympic sports do.” Disney Exec VP/Global Marketing Michael Mendenhall said of the trio, “We think these guys are the exception, that they’ll have real staying power to carry the message at a grass-roots level. These guys will last.” Povtak writes Phelps, after the trio served as grand marshals of a parade at the Magic Kingdom, “was swarmed by autograph seekers” (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 9/1). Phelps: “You could have asked me four years ago if I would have been in this position and I would have had no idea. This has all taken me by surprise. This is something I’ve worked for” (FLORIDA TODAY, 9/1).
