    Grant & Tamia Hill Will
    Display Art Collection

    MUSEUM PIECES: SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Noah Liberman profiles the NATIONAL SPORTS MUSEUM and writes that it will be "a kind of super-museum, with exhibits culled from 25 institutions." The facility plans to open in early '05 in Lower Manhattan. The NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME and the PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME do not plan to provide exhibits (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/25 issue)....Magic F GRANT HILL and his wife, TAMIA, announced a two-year, seven city exhibit tour of Hill collection of art named "Something All Our Own: The Grant Hill Collection of African American Art." The tour begins November 2 at the Orlando Museum of Art. Other stops include New Orleans, Houston, Baltimore, Dallas, the Basketball HOF and Duke Univ. (Hill Ventures).

    NUMBERS GAME: Red Sox Senior Advisor BILL JAMES and ESPN MLB analyst BOBBY VALENTINE appeared on CNBC's "Special Report" last night. CNBC's MARIA BARTIROMO asked, "Is money less of a deciding factor in who ultimately wins?" James: "Money always has been and always will be important. I'm optimistic. I think it's less important than it was two years ago and I think two years from now it will be less important than it is now." Valentine: "I do think we have to think about increasing revenues, not just decreasing expenses" ("Special Report," CNBC, 8/25).

    COMPANIES: Sports-related companies listed in Fortune magazine's "100 Fastest-Growing Companies," include PENN NATIONAL GAMING at No. 20, NAUTILUS GROUP at No. 35, and SKECHERS USA at No. 99 (FORTUNE, 9/1 issue)....NIKE received a perfect score in the HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN's second ranking of how large domestic companies treat gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. Companies are rated on a scale of 0-100% on seven factors including written non-discrimination policies, health insurance coverage for employees' same-sex domestic partners and diversity training (BUSINESS JOURNAL OF PORTLAND, 8/25 issue).

    NAMES: MAGIC JOHNSON is considering backing a project that includes 255 housing units and 45,000 square feet of retail space in L.A.'s Chinatown. The project is expected to cost $65M, including $15M in city funds (L.A. TIMES, 8/26)....In N.Y., Geoffrey Gray reports that MIKE TYSON is negotiating to fight BOB SAPP, the fighter known as the BEAST in the Japanese sport of K-1, "a brutish, martial arts amalgam of karate, kung fu, kick boxing and tae kwan do." Tyson last Friday "pushed the reality of the bout closer" when he signed a management contract with the company K-1. The deal gives the Japanese firm the rights to "handle a coming publicity tour for Tyson in Japan and other commercial endorsements in that country" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/26).
