WELCOME BACK: The Knicks yesterday named Nets Senior VP and former Knicks F WILLIS REED as Special Basketball Advisor, a "newly created position." Reed "started immediately last night" by watching the Knicks' summer-league team practice. While Reed "will do community relations and run the alumni relations program, [he] also will be part of the basketball operations staff in a role that will include college scouting, evaluating/recruiting free agents and advising on the draft." Reed spent 15 years with the Nets, "the last three in which he was a community relations/marketing executive" (N.Y. POST, 7/11).
