Ralph Friedgen
Gary WilliamsUniv. of MD (UM) men's basketball coach Gary Williams and football coach Ralph Friedgen are "expected to both surpass $1[M] in earnings this school year," according to university data obtained and cited by Mark Asher of the WASHINGTON POST. Williams earns a base salary of $202,991 and has earned $540,000 for competition achievement, automobile allowance and radio, TV and personal appearances. Of that nearly $743,000, sources said that Williams "earned at least $25,000 for winning the ACC regular season title and $100,000 in postseason incentives." Sources added that Williams can earn $50,000 in additional incentives for academic achievement and NCAA and state law compliance by him and his players. Sources also said that Williams' sneaker/apparel contract "pays him about $250,000 annually," and another source said that Williams earns $75,000 from his summer camp. Meanwhile, Friedgen's shoe contract "is included in his original contract" which sources said guarantees him $700,000-800,000. Asher wrote because of Friedgen's success, UM "is committed to paying him nearly" $942,000, with a base salary of $179,752 and an additional $762,000 for competitive achievements, automobile allowance, shoe/apparel deals and radio, TV and personal appearances. Friedgen "could earn another $50,000 for academic and citizenship incentives" (WASHINGTON POST, 4/15).
