Not So Silent In The Morning: Gretzky Announcement Time
Published December 13, 2001
A "labour disruption at the CBC has forced the announcement" of the Canadian Olympic men's hockey team to be held at 12:30pm ET on Saturday at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto instead of at 6:30pm on "Hockey Night in Canada" as originally planned, according to William Houston of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. The naming of the full roster by team Exec Dir Wayne Gretzky "will be available to all media outlets." The CBC, despite the dispute with technicians, "will carry the announcement live, even though there is the potential for demonstrations outside the Hall." Also, sources said that "HNIC" will cancel the scheduled Maple Leafs-Canadiens game, and, "in its place, pick up a U.S. feed" of Devils-Senators. The CBC "could attempt to produce [Leafs-Canadiens] by using management personnel in the technicians' jobs," but if managers "botched the show, ... advertisers would complain and the CBC's reputation would be badly damaged" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 12/13).
