GOLF: The PGA Tour has signed a long-term deal with MBNA to issue a PGA Tour- and Senior Tour-branded MasterCard (MBNA)....Buick has signed on as the automotive sponsor of the PGA Tour's '02 Phoenix Open (Buick).
THE SUPER BOWL: In S.F., George Raine reports that "as of yesterday, Fox had only sold" 80% of all available ad time for its telecast of Super Bowl XXXVI. Volkswagen of America will not return as a Super Bowl advertiser, but will advertise during the Winter Olympics. VW spokesperson Tony Fouldapour: "There's a renewed patriotism that is very obvious and very positive'" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 12/13). The NFL has granted 39 companies from 21 states licenses for Super Bowl merchandise. The league expects $100M in sales of Super Bowl XXXVI-licensed goods, comparable to last year. The all-time Super Bowl record was $130M in '97 (NFL).
