Cowboys Outline List Of Requests To Austin For Training Camp
Published December 13, 2001
In a letter to Austin Mayor Gus Garcia, Cowboys Marketing Dir John Hickman "outlined what it would take to bring the Cowboys' training camp back" to Austin, according to Clarence Hill of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, who reported the Cowboys "want the city to construct a training-camp facility, including a 15,000-foot field house and two NFL-sized football fields." The team also wants Austin "to pay their training-camp expenses up to $500,000" (STAR-TELEGRAM, 12/12). In Austin, Rick Cantu wrote the Cowboys' "request for taxpayer money to pay for summer facilities and cover expenses may be unique, but other teams seem to be moving in the same direction." Cantu noted the Cowboys trained in Austin from '90-97 (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 12/12). Meanwhile, Alamodome Dir Mike Abington said Tuesday that he "continues to talk to the ... Cowboys daily about the possibility of the team moving its training camp to San Antonio next summer" (S.A. EXPRESS-NEWS, 12/12).
