Vikings' McCombs Will Listen To Offers, But Won't Sell
Published December 11, 2001
While Vikings Owner Red McCombs "is listening" to prospective buyers for the team, he "says he's not selling, and it's interesting because the NFL actually thinks" that the threat of contraction in MN with the Twins "helps McCombs' chance to get a new stadium with the Vikings," according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Mortensen noted a group headed by former 49ers Steve Young and Brent Jones, with some other business execs in Silicon Valley, "have at least tried to approach" McCombs. Mortensen reported the group has "met with league officials in the past two weeks. They would like to buy an NFL team and possibly set it up" in L.A. However, the group is "not having a lot of luck, but apparently they have the money, they want to build a stadium." But Mortensen added, "The team to watch with L.A. is the San Diego Chargers. They're having some problems [in San Diego and they have] an out of their lease after the year 2003" (ESPN, 12/10).
