Concerns for the safety of U.S. athletes scheduled to compete overseas has led the figure skating, speedskating and field hockey NGB's to "pull delegations out" of int'l events, according to Helene Elliott of the L.A. TIMES. Also, USA Track & Field (USATF) issued an advisory cautioning athletes against wearing U.S. national team logos or clothing "carrying logos of designers or companies typically identified as U.S. companies" while outside the U.S. USATF Media Information Manager Tom Surber: "Most everyone wants to err on the side of caution when traveling, particularly if people are wearing the USA uniform. Most everyone is on pins and needles" (L.A. TIMES, 9/19).
NBA EXHIBITION GAMES: In Toronto, Robert MacLeod writes the NBA is "expected to cancel" its schedule of exhibition games in Europe, Mexico and Japan. One unnamed NBA exec said, "The trip is not going to happen. Everyone's going to be stressed to the gills, so who needs it?" Yesterday, the NBA issued an internal e-mail updating its teams on the potential cancelation of the games and anticipating that training camps for this season "will open on schedule" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 9/19).
