NFL Taking Firm Stand On Substance Promotions
Published August 21, 2001
In "stepping up its get-tough policy on dietary supplement manufacturers," the NFL will send a letter to NJ-based Cytodyne Technologies, the maker of the ephedra product Xenadrine, warning the company "to stop using league logos" in ads, according to Luke Cyphers of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The letter will order Cytodyne to "'cease and desist' using players such as Marshall Faulk and Edgerrin James in uniform" in print ads for the product. In Cytodyne's promotional magazine, "Xenadrine Xtreme Fitness," several NFL players "are pictured in uniform." NFL VP/Communications Greg Aiello: "It's our understanding they did not have permission [to use NFL logos]." A Cytodyne spokesperson declined to comment on the issue (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/21).
