IAAF Event In Edmonton Earns Profit, Receives Local Praise

IAAF World Championships in Athletics officials announced that the ten-day event in Edmonton sold about 400,886 tickets, placing the IAAF "past its [C]$12.5-million break-even sales target," according to Paul Cowan of the EDMONTON SUN, who reports about 54,920 people attended last night's closing ceremonies. Edmonton 2001 CEO Rick LeLacheur said, "I really believe we have helped set the foundation for track and field not only in Alberta but in Canada. ... Attendance per session at these championships has averaged out 38,440, and that is better than" the '93 and '95 IAAF championships (EDMONTON SUN, 8/13). In Edmonton, Terry Jones reports Edmonton 2001 "will likely make a profit" of C$4M "in addition to providing a legacy fund of another" C$5M to "track and field in the Edmonton area" (EDMONTON SUN, 8/13). In Toronto, Jill Mahoney notes that the C$12.5M figure "does not represent sellout crowds at Commonwealth Stadium, but instead merely the amount the committee wanted to raise" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/13).

EARLY REVIEWS: In Edmonton, Kerry Diotte wrote that the event "was a rousing success. ... With 2,500 journalists in town, Edmonton got more international coverage in 10 days than we'd normally get in 10 years. The vast majority of that was positive"
(EDMONTON SUN, 8/12). In Edmonton, Tom Elsworthy: "The Worlds pass into history [Sunday]. They leave memories of great weather and some sensational contests for future athletes to build on" (EDMONTON SUN, 8/12). IAAF President Lamine Diack called the event "a life of dreams in an ideal mood where everything had a happy end" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/13). Also in Edmonton, George Gross wrote, "The British scribes took out their frustration on the city of Edmonton, Edmontonians as a whole and Edmonton organizers. ... They should have looked instead in the direction of the IAAF" (EDMONTON SUN, 8/12).
