Names & Faces: Jeter Partners With Children's Hospital

Yankees SS Derek Jeter announced yesterday a new relationship with the Children's Hospital of N.Y., part of N.Y.-Presbyterian Hospital. Under the partnership, Jeter will introduce a pilot program, which is intended to address the medical and social needs of children whose lives are affected by factors such as poverty, immigration, cultural and language differences and other familial and societal pressures. After yesterday's announcement, Jeter participated in a healthy lifestyles activity with Children's Hospital patients, as well as students from N.Y. Public School 128 (Children's Hospital of New York).
CHANDLER SIGNS WITH NIKE: Bulls F Tyson Chandler, the No. 2 overall player selected in the NBA Draft, signed an endorsement contract with Nike. Chandler's agent Jeff Schwartz called the contract a multiyear deal, and sources said that the deal averages about $350,000 "guaranteed annually with small additional incentives over five years" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/24).
MICH LIGHT TEES UP PROMO: The SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Jennifer Lee reports LPGA sponsor Michelob Light launched a promo on LPGA.com yesterday, which will give away a round of golf with Annika Sorenstam to three grand prize winners. Winners will be selected and announced during telecasts of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, Wendy's Championship for Children and the State Farm Classic (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 7/23 issue). GOLF WORLD BUSINESS noted the title of the promo is "Michelob Light's Golf with Annika." The contest is set to run through September 2. Michelob Light recently held another promo on LPGA.com and released a TV ad featuring Sorenstam (GOLF WORLD BUSINESS, 7/23).
FASSEL'S FUEL: In N.Y., John Harper profiles NFL Giants coach Jim Fassel and writes, "Suddenly, ... [Fassel] is a celebrity." Tommy Hilfiger "dressed him for fashion shoot," and there are plans for TV spots with the James Gandolfini (aka Tony Soprano), for ABC's "MNF." Also, "soon you'll see him hawking camcorders on the tube." Fassel: "I turned down most of the stuff people wanted me to do. But some of it is good to have some fun with. I'm not doing it for my ego. It's good publicity for the Giants" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/24).
