ACC And Raycom Sports Working To Bring Bowl Game To Charlotte
Published July 24, 2001
The CHARLOTTE OBSERVER’s Ron Green reported that Charlotte may "be home to a college football bowl game matching teams from the ACC and SEC" as early as next season. The game "would match the fourth or fifth teams from the ACC and SEC." Raycom Sports is working with ACC officials to create the bowl game and COO Ken Haines said, "It isn't done but we're hopeful it can get done." Green wrote the game "would not be the Micron PC Bowl, which has considered Ericsson Stadium as a possible site after recent attendance problems" in Fort Lauderdale. That bowl "is likely to move to Orlando, where the Citrus Bowl is played." Haines added, "Our feeling is Charlotte would be an excellent bowl destination given its state of the art stadium, its proximity to so many ACC teams and the fact there are no regularly scheduled college games there." The NCAA "has adopted a moratorium on adding bowls, allowing only 26," so before the Charlotte game could become a reality, at least one existing game would have to cease operation (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/24).
