ESPN Sports Poll Examines The Change In Fan Activity

Each month the ESPN Sports Poll computes a Twelve-Sport Fan Index, the combined average fan activity of the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA basketball and football, pro golf, pro tennis, pro soccer, pro figure skating, auto racing and pro boxing. The Twelve-Sport Fan Index is tracked year to year and month to month. Changes are noted each month in THE DAILY. Following are the December changes. The Sports Poll interviews 2,000 respondents aged 12+ each month.

The Twelve-Sport Fan Index experienced some growth from December '99-December '00. This rise was driven by increases in the fan bases of pro golf (11.6%), pro tennis (6.5%), the NHL (5.4%), the NBA (5.0%), and pro figure skating (4.6%). When comparing December '00 to November '00, the Twelve-Sport Index increased about 1%. During this time, there were increases in the fan bases of pro figure skating (7.5%), and college basketball (6.3%).
