NHL'S JOAN OF ARC: The CP reported the NHL and NHLPA have hired Philadelphia-based arbitrator JOAN PARKER to replace the "fired" LAWRENCE HOLDEN. Parker "is the first female" arbitrator in North American professional sports. NHL VP/Media Relations FRANK BROWN said that Parker has "served as a labour management and employment arbitrator since 1976 and has adjudicated a broad range of labor disputes in several different industries" (CP, 1/17).
