MAPLE LEAFS HOCKEY NETWORK GETS A CHRISTMAS BONUS FROM CRTC

The Canadian Radio & Telecom Commission's (CRTC)
licenses for new digital channels grant the four new hockey
channels the right to broadcast live games, according to
Chris Zelkovich of the TORONTO STAR, who reports that the
licenses allow the new digital channels "to devote up to" 5%
of their schedule to live sports events. While that "may
not sound like a significant number," the Maple Leafs "have
already calculated" that it is "enough to allow them to
carry" 125 games per year. Maple Leaf Sports &
Entertainment President & CEO Richard Peddie called the
ability to broadcast live games "great news for us. ... Our
plan always was that it was a complementary channel, but we
were always mindful that (carrying Leaf games) was possible
with license amendments. Now we don't need amendments. ...
So when our rights are up in three years, I can't say what
we'll do but it's always nice having (the right to do live
games) in your back pocket" (TORONTO STAR, 12/20).
