NO BIZ LIKE SHOE BIZ: AZ TO CHANGE TERMS OF UNIV. DEAL?
Published November 6, 2000
A Univ. of AZ committee is "moving toward giving"
university athletes the "right not to wear Nike or other
corporate logos," according to Bruce Pascoe of the ARIZONA
DAILY STAR, who reported that "such a move could have little
impact" with the men's basketball team, as coach Lute Olson
and two veteran players say that the "players generally
don't have a problem" wearing Nike. While the proposal
"would not affect" UA's current Nike deal that runs through
next year, Faculty Senate Chair Jerry Hogle said that it
"would only force UA to include provisions allowing
student-athletes the choice not to wear a particular logo in
all future contracts" (ARIZONA DAILY STAR, 11/4).
A SPONSORSHIP ENCLAVE: In DC, Jim Hage examined Reebok
dropping its sponsorship deal with The Enclave, "one of only
a handful of post-collegiate" track & field training groups
in the U.S. (see THE DAILY, 11/3), and wrote that the
company "provided more than" $100,000 annually to the group.
Octagon's Renaldo Nehemiah said that he has had discussions
with "numerous potential corporate sponsors," including AOL,
Xerox and Verizon, as well as shoe companies like adidas,
New Balance and Asics (WASHINGTON POST, 11/4).
