WOMEN'S PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE GETS NEW OWNERSHIP

The Women's Pro Football League "has been taken over by
one of its teams," according to Dan Ryan of the Daytona
Beach NEWS-JOURNAL. CO Valkryies Owner Larry Perry has
assembled an ownership group that will provide $1M for the
league to finish the season and "a promise to reorganize the
league's infrastructure in exchange" for 60.5% ownership of
the first-year organization. Perry: "It's the golden rule,
he who has the gold makes the rule. We don't expect to make
a profit for three years, but we feel that women's football
is an idea whose time has come." One issue is trying to
improve the competitive balance in the league. Carter
Turner, consultant for the Daytona Beach franchise, stated,
"The 54-0 games weren't doing anybody any good. We want
this to be NFL-style football, not some XFL or roller-derby
type of thing." Perry added, "We'll find a way to have a
balance of the games" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 11/29).
