  • ESPN SPORTS POLL'S TWELVE-SPORT FAN INDEX SEES BIG BUMP

              Each month the ESPN Sports Poll computes a Twelve-Sport
         Fan Index, the combined average fan activity of the NFL,
         MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA basketball and football, pro golf, pro
         tennis, pro soccer, pro figure skating, auto racing and pro
         boxing.  The Index is tracked year-to-year and month-to-
         month.  Changes are noted each month in THE DAILY. 
         Following are the August changes.  Note: The Sports Poll
         interviews 2000 respondents age 12+ each month.

              The Twelve-Sport Fan Index rose 8.4% from August '99 to
         August 2000.  The growth was driven by increases in the fan
         bases of pro golf (17.5%), pro boxing (14.8%), auto racing
         (14.3%), pro figure skating (13.3%) and pro tennis (10.0%). 
         When comparing July 2000 to August 2000, the Index also
         recognized growth.  During this time, there was dramatic
         growth in the fan base of pro golf (6.4%), college football
         (4.6%) and pro tennis (4.4%).
