ROMNEY AND SALT LAKE CITY MAYOR DIFFER ON NBC'S BACKDROP

SLOC President Mitt Romney has said "privately" that he
wants the LDS Church's downtown temple in Salt Lake City "to
be the backdrop for the 2002 Winter Games, an image visitors
and television viewers around the world will remember,"
according to Rebecca Walsh of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. But
city Mayor Rocky Anderson "says focusing on the temple is a
bad idea, if only for the message it sends to Utah's highly
sensitive non-Mormon population." Anderson would "rather
have the world focus on a more neutral landmark -- City
Hall." Romney: "There will be many icons. We'll just see
what the world picks to remember our city by." Anderson
"fears pushing the temple will alienate non-Mormon residents
who are already concerned the 2002 Olympics will become the
'Mormon Games.'" NBC Senior Olympic Producer Jim Bell told
Walsh that he "figures NBC will focus on nature and athletes
more than buildings" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 11/17).
