Boosted by its new sponsorship agreement with the XFL,
AL-based HealthSouth is "executing a sports medicine game
plan where relationships with thousands of teams and leagues
... help fuel the company's improving performance,"
according to John Thorsberg of CBS MarketWatch. HealthSouth
Chair & CEO Richard Scrushy said the company will be the
startup football league's sports medicine provider.
Scrushy: "In all their cities, we'll work with the doctors,
help pull the trainers together and handle all their medical
needs." Thorsberg noted that if XFL Chair Vince McMahon's
promise of "smash mouth" football is correct, then
HealthSouth's doctors "could be in for a long season of
practicing emergency medical care." Scrushy, on the
company's sports strategy: "We have about 560 professional
teams right now. We have baseball, football, basketball,
soccer, and hockey. We work with the PGA, the Senior PGA
and the LPGA. We also work with the U.S. Olympic Committee
and various teams plus the PBR (Professional Bull Riders
Association) and the CBA." HealthSouth also has ties with
125 colleges and universities and about 2,000 high school
sports programs nationwide (CBS MarketWatch, 11/11).
