          FRANCE ATTENDS RACE: NASCAR President BILL FRANCE JR., 
     who is recovering from chemotherapy treatment and a neuro-
     muscular disease, attended his first Winston Cup race since
     April 30 over the weekend in FL.  In Atlanta, Carvell &
     Levine write that France is "weak physically" and "had to be
     assisted with walking" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 11/13).
          OTHER NAMES: 76ers President PAT CROCE's book, "I FEEL
     GREAT AND YOU WILL TOO!," co-written with BILL LYON, is No.
     6 on the N.Y. TIMES Business Best Sellers List among
     hardcover titles (N.Y. TIMES, 11/12)....Daktronics CEO
     AELRED KURTENBACH was honored as part of a full-page ad in
     USA TODAY for winning the 2000 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of
     The Year award for manufacturing.  Daktronics makes
     scoreboards that are in more than 1,000 sports facilities
     (USA TODAY, 11/13)....'98 U.S. Amateur Golf Champion HANK
     KUEHNE had "major surgery" on his left arm and elbow last
     week, putting his golf career in "jeopardy."  He will
     undergo four to six weeks of recovery and rehabilitation
     before being able to play golf again (DALLAS MORNING NEWS,
     11/11)....In Boston, Will McDonough examined the role of
     Northeastern Univ.'s CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF SPORT IN
     SOCIETY.  He wrote, "For years, I've felt this whole Center
     for the Study of Sport in Society has been a farce."  He
     noted that this year's Hall of Fame dinner last week "took
     in more than $300,000" (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/11)....In a special
     supplement on skiing in Sunday's N.Y. TIMES Travel section,
     Meg Lukens Noonan wrote that winter resorts "continue to
     invest heavily" in the construction of villages with private
     homes, lodges, restaurants, shops, spas, fitness centers,
     and entertainment all "within walking distance" of the ski
     lifts.  Leisure Trends Group VP JOY SPRING: "Ski areas are
     having to reinvent themselves" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/12).
