MLB TEAM NEWS: D'BACKS, RAYS SITUATIONS DON'T WORRY SELIG

In an effort to "fill empty seats" in the upper level of
Bank One Ballpark, the D'Backs announced Friday that they are
decreasing ticket prices in that area, according to Richard
Obert of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC, who reported that there will
be a ticket price increase for 45% of the park's overall
seating next season. The ticket changes come after D'Backs
Managing General Partner Jerry Colangelo stated that the team
has lost $30M in '99. Colangelo: "The increase is modest at
best. ... We could have looked to a much larger increase (in
ticket prices), but we didn't." D'Backs Senior VP/Marketing
& Sales Scott Brubaker: "This is not across the board, heavy
increase. We are able to accomplish goals of raising
revenues some, but not at the expense of the average fan."
Brubaker also said that the largest increase "is found at the
smallest quantity of seats in the lower level." The average
2001 season ticket price will increase 2.7% to $16.96. For
single-game tickets, the average price will be $18.19, up
6.17% from last season. Season tickets in the upper level
are decreasing 4.24%, while the tickets in the lower level
     will increase 5.86%. For lower-level, single-game seats,
there is a 10.55% average increase (AZ REPUBLIC, 10/14). MLB
Commissioner Bud Selig was asked if he was concerned about
the D'Backs' "recent financial problems." Selig: "I don't
have any concerns at all. Obviously, I talk to ... Colangelo
a lot. Much has been made, more than it should be. Every
franchise is going to have -- like everything in life -- its
ups and downs" (Mark Gonzales, ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/15).
RAY OF HOPE: Meanwhile, Selig said on Saturday that he
"remains concerned" about the Devil Rays' attendance figures,
but he "also remains confident they eventually will be
successful." He said he has spoken with Devil Rays Managing
General Partner Vince Naimoli "several times about the issue
and is pleased with the Rays' efforts." Selig said he has
"every confidence their team will get better and so will
their attendance" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 10/15).
AT THE ROCK PILE: While the Rockies will not increase
ticket prices next season, Mike Klis reported that "there is
still hope" for the team to generate added revenue as it has
"plans to add another 250 premium seats directly behind home
plate" at Coors Field. Rockies VP/Business Operations Keli
McGregor said that it is "too early to say if the premium
seating will be added in time" for the 2001 season, but the
section "eventually will be added" (DENVER POST, 10/14).
