MEDIA NOTES

          TV MONITOR: Last night's 10:00pm ET 60-minute edition
     of FSN's "National Sports Report" led with a jury awarding
     $2M to Heather Mercer, ruling Duke Univ. discriminated
     against her, followed by a preview of the Yankees-Mariners
     ALCS Game Three.  "NSR" had 6:52 of total MLB coverage. 
     Last night's 11:00pm ET 30-minute edition of CNN/SI's
     "Sports Tonight" led with an injury update on Pacers G/F
     Jalen Rose, followed by 76ers-Knicks.  The first non-NBA
     report, at 5:04, was an injury update on Jets QB Vinny
     Testaverde.  "Sports Tonight" had 1:02 of total MLB
     coverage.  Last night's 11:00pm ET (late due to NCAA
     football) 60-minute edition of ESPN's "SportsCenter" led
     with a scoring update on the Mets-Cardinals NLCS Game Two,
     followed by Flyers-Stars.  "SportsCenter" had 15:42 of total
     MLB coverage (THE DAILY). 
          NOTES: The Tribune Co. fired 34 employees from its
     online media business Thursday to cut costs following its
     $6.5B merger with Times Mirror Company.  Twenty employees
     were from the L.A. Times' Web site, six from the Chicago
     Tribune's Web site and ChicagoSports.com and eight from the
     company's central interactive offices (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER,
     10/13)....The Wild's home opener Wednesday against the
     Flyers averaged a 7.4/12 local rating on KMSP-UPN, beating
     Fox's MLB coverage, which did a 4.3/7 local rating on WFTC. 
     KMSP President & GM Stu Swartz: "We're ecstatic.  The North
     Stars averaged about a 4 rating" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE,
     10/13)....In L.A., Larry Stewart reports that ABC Radio "is
     very close to a deal in which it will purchase KRLA[AM] and
     turn it into an all-sports station featuring ESPN Radio
     programming" (L.A. TIMES, 10/13).
