TV MONITOR: Last night's 10:00pm ET 60-minute edition
of FSN's "National Sports Report" led with the Mariners-
Yankees ALCS Game Two, followed by a report on steroid use
in MLB. The first non-MLB report, at 19:49 into the
broadcast, was the controversy surrounding 76ers G Allen
Iverson's new CD. "NSR" had 14:24 of total MLB coverage.
Last night's 11:00pm ET 60-minute edition of ESPN's
"SportsCenter" led with Mariners-Yankees, followed by a
scoring update on the Mets-Cardinals NLCS Game One. The
first non-MLB report, at 4:11, was Canadiens-Rangers.
"SportsCenter" had 24:55 of total MLB coverage. Last
night's 11:00pm ET 30-minute edition of CNN/SI's "Sports
Tonight" was pre-empted by analysis from last night's
presidential debate in NC (THE DAILY).
A COOL RECEPTION FOR HOCKEY IN CANADA: In Toronto,
William Houston reports that "Hockey Night in Canada"'s
first broadcast of the season, featuring Canadiens-Maple
Leafs, averaged 1.115 million viewers, down 20% from last
year (same teams, 1.433 million viewers). The second game
(Avalanche-Oilers) drew 607,000 viewers, down 18% from last
year's second game viewers of 742,000 (GLOBE & MAIL, 10/12).
