LEAGUE NOTES

HELP! SPONSOR WANTED: Five-time Olympic rowing gold-
medalist Steve Redgrave "is seeking corporate backing for a
Formula One-type international competition for the sport"
that would feature 60-second races with "the world's best
     oarsmen battling" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 9/25).
CLOSING THE BOOKS ON THE OPEN: A record 606,017 people
attended the 2000 U.S. Open, breaking last year's record of
584,490. Merchandise sales were also close to $8.3M,
setting a U.S. Open sales record (USTA). Merchandise sales
were up 15.3% over last year (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/25).
LPGA: In Orlando, Derek Catron writes that in '89,
Daytona Beach "leaders" saw the LPGA relocating its
headquarters to the city "as the catalyst for a project that
would carve a new town from the scrub and wetlands" on the
city's "western fringe," but "it hasn't happened."
Taxpayers paid out $25M to bring the LPGA to Daytona Beach,
but "those involved in the project remain as optimistic as
they were 10 years ago, saying LPGA is ready to bloom in the
     coming year" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 9/28).
