NAMES IN THE NEWS

          In Denver, Jason Blevins wrote that readers of SKI
     magazine voted VAIL, CO, as the "best resort in North
     America" in the publication's "Top 60 Resort Guide."  Vail
     "beat out its arch-rival" WHISTLER/BLACKCOMB in BC, which
     last year "knocked Vail from its longheld perch" at the top
     of the list.  Whistler/Blackcomb fell to third, behind UT's
     DEER VALLEY (DENVER POST, 9/13)....In Dallas, Al Brumley
     profiles KLIF-AM sports-talk host NORM HITZGES, who marked
     his 25th year on radio in the city in August and "is being
     honored with a roast" tonight.  Hitzges "has made a career
     out of being like someone you've never heard.  He has seemed
     to have more jobs -- at once -- than there are days in the
     week" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/14)....A bill to ban betting
     on amateur sports was approved by the House Judiciary
     Committee yesterday, but House GOP Conference Chair J.C.
     WATTS (R-OK) said that he "still does not think the bill
     will get passed this year" (Mult., 9/13)....DENNIS RODMAN
     appeared on the "Tonight Show" wearing a RodmanTV T-shirt
     and discussed his new Web site. On having cameras in his
     house, except the bedroom: "Nothing happens in the bedroom. 
     Everything goes on downstairs. ... You got the Dagger Room. 
     A lot of stabbing going on in there" (NBC, 9/13).
