FRANCHISE NOTES

The NFL Giants will wear their new white jerseys for
Sunday's home opener at Giants Stadium, "even though this
design and color scheme will be used as a road uniform for
the rest of the season." The white uniforms have red
numbers and will be worn with the same gray pants worn with
     the newly-designed blue jerseys (N.Y. TIMES, 8/29)....In
Toronto, Jim Hunt cites an "insider" as saying that former
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) Dir Larry Tanenbaum
resigned because "he couldn't get along with" Chair Steve
Stavro. Hunt adds that if Stavro should "ever decide to
sell his shares" in MLSE, "he first must offer them" to the
Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, which holds 49% of MLSE to
Stavro's 51%, "and then to Tanenbaum." Hunt: "Stay tuned.
The Leafs may make as much news in the boardroom as on the
ice" (TORONTO SUN, 8/29)....In DC, Eric Fisher wrote that
the sale of DC United's operating rights "is now looking as
bleak as it ever has during an arduous and embarrassing two-
year-old sale process." Fisher: "Perhaps the real issue
with the sale is the price itself. More to the point, is a
Major League Soccer team, even this one with its glittering
history, really worth $25 million? After all, the league's
ledger is not much to get excited about" (WASHINGTON TIMES,
8/27)....Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder responded to John
Feinstein's recent criticism of him as an "amateur." Snyder
said Feinstein was "just [stating] opinions to try to get
[himself] a little bit of press." Snyder: "You have to get
used to the criticism and some of the criticism that's not
     quite accurate" (FSN, 8/28).
