Peter Jacobsen said that his second-year golf
tournament, the Reno-Tahoe Open, has "some work to do to
establish itself" on the PGA Tour, as the event is held the
same week as the WGC NEC Invitational and "doesn't have a
title sponsor," according to John Schumacher of the
SACRAMENTO BEE. While several founding sponsors have
"combined for almost" $1.6M this year, Jacobsen estimated
that "even if the tournament turns a profit," his company,
Jacobsen Productions, will lose $300,000-400,000 on the '99
and 2000 events. Jacobsen: "I don't know if I want to go
another year without a title sponsor" (SAC. BEE, 8/23).
HERE'S THE OFFICIAL SPIN ON NIKE BALL: PGA Tour pro
Kirk Triplett, on Public Remedies' suit against Nike over
the public's access to custom-made golf balls for Tiger
Woods: "The general public doesn't want his ball because
[Nike has] taken a ball and taken a little bit of the spin
out of it for [Woods]. Well, the general public, they need a
ball that spins a little bit more, so they're better off
without his ball anyway" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 8/23).
