JUAN-ON-JUAN: SAMARANCH WON'T BE SINGING IN THE RAIN

IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch is interviewed by
Christopher Clarey of the N.Y. TIMES and discusses Sydney's
preparation for the Summer Games in September. Samaranch:
"The positive aspects of [Sydney] is that they work very
well. They work on time. All the sports facilities were
ready one year before. ... The bad thing for me regarding
the Games is that they are in the spring (in the Southern
Hemisphere). Spring is not very warm. It could be cold.
We could have rain, and that is, for me, the main problem."
Asked how the IOC will "project itself" around Sydney and
whether the organization will stay in the "finest hotels"
and drive in "chauffeured cars," Samaranch said, "We will be
in a hotel, a normal hotel. I will have my bedroom and a
living room to meet with the people from the delegations who
want to see me. That is what I need. ... We will have a van
to have some people with me, and we'll see. Listen, I need
     a car, don't I? But it will be a van" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/27).
