A RIDDELL WRAPPED IN A MYSTERY: SPORTING GOODS CO. SALE?

NY-based sporting goods manufacturer Riddell Sports has
retained Lehman Brothers to "explore different strategic
options," including the sale of the company, according to
the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Riddell "hasn't shown a yearly
profit" since '96, despite increases in revenue, "because of
interest payments related to several acquisitions" (WALL
STREET JOURNAL, 7/26). Riddell had '99 sales of $208.6M, up
12% from '98. Riddell brands include Umbro, Varsity Spirit
and Riddell (Todd Zeranski, BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/26).
