MLB TEAM NOTES: WILL REDS INCREASE TIX PRICES IN MIDSEASON?

After turning down a trade to the Mets, Reds SS Barry
Larkin agreed to a three-year, $27M contract extension with
the Reds Sunday night that could result in the team
increasing ticket prices midseason, according to a report in
the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. Reds COO John Allen: "We might do
something no one has ever done in baseball before. We might
raise ticket prices this year. We will definitely raise
them for next year" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 7/23).
ROGERS, LOVERS OF CLOUT? Speculation continues that
Rogers Communications will soon finalize a deal for the Blue
Jays. In speaking with analysts on Friday, Rogers Senior VP
John Tory said that acquiring sports teams is "a sensible
move" for media companies. Tory called the Blue Jays "a
very attractive sports franchise" that could help create a
"virtual network" linking Rogers broadcast systems with
other nets to create new interest in Rogers and the team.
Analysts said Friday that an IPO of Rogers' media or cable
units "would generate cash to fund the purchase" of the team
and "cover" the Blue Jays' C$70M payroll (NATIONAL POST,
7/22). Tory said that the company could make the Blue Jays
"the hub of a sports, broadcasting and marketing
powerhouse," as it would provide the "content" for different
parts of the Rogers business group (TORONTO STAR, 7/22). In
Toronto, Peter Goddard wrote that if part of the C$937.5M
that Rogers raised in the securities market last week goes
to buy the Blue Jays from Interbrew "as expected," the team
"will be the latest in a long line of sports takeovers" by
     media businesses. Goddard: "A Jays-Rogers sports-media
empire could shake up the rest of the Canadian television
industry, other Canadian sports franchises, sports
merchandising and even the Internet (TORONTO STAR, 7/22).
